Colton woke for his first day of boot camp, breathing heavily and covered in sweat.

35

The entirety of Dulver gathered outside the front entrance, the Earthlings preparing to all head to the same camp. The instructors said their goodbyes, each making a point of shaking Colton’s hand and wishing him strength and luck in whatever may come.

Deen emphatically believed Colton had what it took. “Since day one, you surprised us all here,” the man said in farewell. “Now go surprise the rest of the universe.”

Allandra remained composed, but she still grabbed one of Colton’s hands in both of hers and said, “All of our fates now lie with you, Colton. Follow your heart and follow the prophets. They will not let you down, and you will not let us. I know your personality; you will not allow yourself to.” She kissed him on the cheek and walked away.

He felt multiple emotions: pride, fear, excitement, and above all, nervousness. He knew he would do what was right and become whoever he must. But he had never liked disappointing anyone, even with something small. And what he embarked upon was anything but small. He hoped he could meet the challenge.

The transports were the same hover-buses they had arrived at the facility in. With all going to the same place, people hopped on whichever bus at their leisure. Colton got into a line with Tommy, Ace, and Morris. Casting a glance around, he spotted Kyla getting in a line two buses over. She was with Molly, Emily, and Becky. Seeing her sent a jab to his gut, and thinking about the whole situation made him want to find a dark space to crawl into and sleep.

His line started to move, and within moments he hefted his bag and headed onto the bus. When he turned to look one last time, Kyla stared back at him. She gave him the faintest of smiles before climbing into her transport. Colton did the same.

It didn’t take long for the buses to hover up, the gates to open, and them to pour out. No surprise to Colton; there were media outside of the facility. What was surprising, however, was how few.

“Thought there’d be more,” he muttered to Tommy.

Tommy shrugged. “I’m sure the Throne kept your location wrapped up tight. They look to have been camping there for quite some time. They’re probably outside all the facilities.”

Colton figured he had a point. Some reporters had chairs next to their vehicles, and it seemed a section had long been roped off, with pavilions and tables standing.

In a short time, the buses cruised with the third level of traffic above the city. Colton noted that the sky was a little bluer than the day they arrived, and the sun shone a bit brighter. He had learned that the seasons on Vintara only changed slightly. The temperature always remained cool, around 60°F - 70°F.

They were high up, but the ground looked dry and gray outside the city. They passed over rolling plains, with some few shrubberies scattered throughout.
